Search bar on task bar

Nancy

Hi,

On the middle of the task bar I have this search bar that usually reads
Yahoo! Search (but there are other options to choose from.) I don't want or
need this search window taking up so much space on that task bar. HOW can I
get rid of it? Please do not post to this unless you do know how. (If
there appears to be an answer to my post it might be ignored by someone who
might know the answer.)

Thanks so much,
Nancy

Contact Yahoo as it is their search bar, or look to see if the Yahoo search
bar has an 'options' icon where you may or may not be given choices..

Or look in your list of installed programs and see if you can uninstall it
there.

Uninstall it.

And by the way, USENET doesn't come with an SLA so you can't request who
does and doesn't answer your questions. Obviously, etiquette should always
be observed, but ultimately you must play by the same rules as everyone
else, and that means taking your changes when you post. If this is
unacceptable, MS offer a range of paid support services as do many 3rd
parties.

That is what happens when you install Yahoo and are NOT attentive to the
various choices YOU can select during the installation.

This bar was installed in the new computer. There are no options to get rid
of it at all. I did not, would not, install it. Even the support phone
center at HP couldn't find out how to do this. We looked in many places.
You would think you could config the startup or some such thing. It is
firmly lodged. There are other options on this as well as Yahoo, however.
But the mini window on the taskbar takes up a lot of room. Wish someone
could figure this one out. It bugs others, too, as I have seen, but nobody
knows the solution.

Thanks for the help ... maybe someone has found out this real difficult one!

Ok, I stand corrected. Sorry for my seeming rude plea to not have someone
say something vague. You say to "uninstall" it. What would this be called?
Have you uninstalled it on yours? It is not some program that I can readily
identify. HP tech support couldn't "find" it themselves.

Thanks,
Nancy

What would such a program be called? Have you uninstalled it? It came with
the computer.

It's probably the Yahoo Toolbar, which should be listing under your program
list.

I don't know whether or not this will help or not...I don't have the problem
myself to confirm or verify but I'd try this

Control Panel > Admin Tools > System Configuration

Click on STARTUP tab and de-select any yahoo entries that look relevant if
there are any in there.

Uninstall everything concerning Yahoo.

Some other useful apps, such as Java, will also install Yahoo if you do NOT
deselect it during the install process.

Yahoo is getting as bad as AOHell.

I don't for one minute believe that HP does not know how to get rid of this.
They are just under contract with Yahoo to put it there in the first place,
and they get X amount of money for every computer shipped that has it
included.

Call tech support again and make certain that you keep asking to speak to a
persons supervisor. You have to elevate your complaint all the way up, till
you find someone who is responsive.

The same thing occurs when a person tries to dump AOHell. They make it as
difficult for you as humanly possible.

No such luck. It seems to me it is more of an HP thing than yahoo, but
yahoo sponsored it.

This is exactly what HP support had me doing. I read off all the entries.
Nothing "seemed" to be what it would be called. Certainly nothing with the
word Yahoo in it.

Oh, that it were that easy. No such options are available.

I thought I already answered this question. Maybe it was from another
poster. Have a new HP computer? This Yahoo search bar comes from the
repellent "HP PC Health Center" - or words to that effect - that starts
with your computer. It is completely unnecessary and invasive. Open the
PC Health Center and change startup options there. The Yahoo Search Bar
is somewhere in that applet. I can't tell you exactly where because it
has been a week since I disabled it on a client's new machine. You
really need to look very carefully because it was hard to find. But it
*is* there and you can disable it. I don't know if you can uninstall it
but it isn't necessary to do that.

I would take a snapshot of that part of the toolbar to show you but I know
it's a no no to add any attachments here so I will try to describe this
"thing" to you. This is about 1/4 of the width of the task bar. If you
click in the gray area surrounding this "thing-mini window" you will pull up
the HP Total Care Advisor. On the left of this mini window ... very
faintly... are the letters hp. Then the actual mini window has the words
"Yahoo! Search". If you click on that window it replaces the logo with a
search of whatever you type in. It takes you immediately to the internet
just as though you had a search engine open wishing to find something. But
I would rather not take up 1/4 of my task bar with that nonsense. I can
search by clicking on the internet icon anyway so why have that excess stuff
on there?
There is a small down arrow to the right of this window. If you click on
this arrow you get the choices of Yahoo Search, Comparison Shopping, Search
help and support, launch HP advisor, or Advisor preferences.

I hate to call support again. It's difficult to understand them speaking
such broken English and then the actual connection sounds like they are on a
cell phone that is cutting in and out (we live out in the boonies with very
poor cell phone reception). I was on line 2 1/2 hours for something else
last week and got absolutely nowhere but found something in here that took
me right to the root of the problem. I was able to "fix" my problem in 10
to 15 minutes! This group can be a wonderful thing.

I noticed someone else posted this same problem but only one person answered
and it was not a solution that works. I thought maybe since there was no
more correspondance this person gave up.

Thanks,
Nancy

Do as Malke has suggested and remove that piece of HP garbage that she has
found is the source of your consternation.
