search bar missing

Okay, doing some work on friend's computer and i found
that when i go to start and try to search for
something.....(start, search) the search option doesnt
exist. He doesn't know where it went and wants it back.
how to fix?

Did your friend fiddle with the group policy editor? Nonetheless, check out

** Look in "Policy:Remove Search item from Start Menu" section.
