seagate vs. maxtor vs. western digital

Hey All-
I was wondering what the good people on a.c.h.p-h would have to say
about the major hard drive brands - mainly in the areas of reliability and
noise. I'm planning on upgrading this summer, but I haven't personally
explored all the brands sufficiently yet. Just note that this would be a
simple setup-- RAID and the like wouldn't be an issue.
Personally, I've had nothing but bad luck with Maxtor drives. Seagate
and Western Digital have been pretty good for me, but I'm still trying to
sort things out. Since all three brands are priced relatively similar, I
thought a collective opinion would be in order.

Always had good service for Seagates over the last 10 years. Encountered 4
physical failures over the years at different times at home and work, all
Fujitsus!!

The only drives I've had fail were maxtors. Personally, I prefer Seagate.

IIRC fujitsu ended up getting shafted by another company that sold them
bad chips. There was one run of fujitsu HDDs that had a very high
failure rate due to this. Those who purchased ones that happened by
chance to have the good chips on them sometimes made a few dollars (or
at least enough to upgrade their drives) by selling their good drives to
those who had a circuit board burn out for data recovery.

In the last year or so I've had one failure on each . Seagate , Maxtor and
WD

However of the three the Seagate had failed after 8 months...
the Maxtor after 1 month and the WD after 2 years.(I got warrantly
replacements on all of them *promptly* and without any hassles)

Although the vast majority of the drives I buy have been Maxtors
and have never had a problem otherwise...I'm thinking of using more WD's
in the future simply due to the longer warranty.

Oh...to be fair to Seagate...the drive I purchased was private-label...
so I don't know if it was built to the same specs as their "brand-named"
drives.

Using Maxtor's and Western Digitals. Some almost 5 years old. Had failures
with IBM Deathstars, Jaton and Seagate.

I vote for Western Digital mainly because I like their policies better.
I also have an old 6 gig WD that is over 7 years old now. I do have a
Maxtor 40 gig that hasn't given me any trouble and it's 2 years old and
has been in several machines and has been changed from vertical to
horizontal. I still plan to buy WD from now on.

Jon,

I'll throw another variable in here. I'm on my second Samsung and not
looking back <g>. Had been buying Seagates for quite a while, and was
pleased w/ quietness and reliability (had one go bad, and newegg replaced
it w/o a hassle).

First Samsung was 40GB 2MB cache drive, and it was/is quieter than the
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB it replaced, and faster. Just replaced the 40GB
Samsung w/ a 160GB 8MB cache PATA drive. I was worried going in that
a multi platter drive would be noisier than the single platter 40GB, but
this
drive set that worry aside. Man is it fast! And as far as noise is
concerned
it is stone quiet.

the samsung P80s are the quietest 7200rpm drives currenty available and,
unlike some of the others, still have a 3 year warranty.

This is a tough decision. They all eventually fail--if you realize
this you'll be fine with any well-known brand. IBM used to be the
best choice years ago, but surprisingly their QC went to pot. Last
year Maxtor drives were all the rage. Years ago many people swore by
Seagate (I think they bought Conner then things got confusing). Right
now Western Digital seems to be an excellent choice for a hard drive.
It is a good idea to get feedback about warranty on failed products,
as with any brand a certain percentage will fail way too soon.

Personally, I'd probably go with the Seagate purely on the basis that
they are supposedly quieter than the others and there's not really much
difference in performance. You might also consider the Hitachi 7k250
series which I believe have slightly better performance than the others.

Seagate all the way, but thining of get a a Hitachi 160giger, fastest
7200 drive :), even smacks the Bitch up of a Raptor 10,000 rpm in
most areas.

Bye.

References? Numbers? I can't see one important area where the Hitachi
beats the Raptor except price.

I've used all three, and in the past 10 years I've had 2 drives fail and
both were Maxtor. I have been sticking with WD lately, mostly for their
setup utility. Maybe (hopefully) Maxtor has improved theirs in the last
couple of years, but it was horrendous, especially on a new build. The WD
setup CD is a breeze.

Over the years I've replaced more seagates than maxtor and wd
combined.

but with all the other post i'm now confused about what to buy... good
luck
