Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 Clicking Noise??! (and its new!)

Hi

I have a Brand New Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250mb ATA.

I've formatted and been using the drive for 3 days and yesterday and
today it started clicking. It clicks every second for about 5 mins,
and then stops. Sometimes it pauses for 2 or 3 seconds, and then
carrys on clicking again. Very Weird.
Seems to do it randomly and even when I am not accessing the drive.

The noise is a slightly-"metallic" clicking sound.

Can anyone shed any light on this or advise what I should do?

Thanks in advance.

Better save your data NOW, clicking/clanking is a sign of imminent failure.

Nope, its one of the ways drives die.

Most likely its the drive recalibrating when it cant read the platters.
or advise what I should do?

Backup any data that matters NOW, even if you have
to run out and buy a CD or DVD burner to do that.

Run Seagate's diagnostic on the drive. Its on their web site.

Feel the drive and check how hot its getting.

See what the SMART data for the drive says using Everest.

1. Backup and expect drive failure
2. Determine problem: Read the SMART attributes and run a long
SMART self-test. Also look at drive temperature. Overheating
can also cause this. (A dtive this hot will die soon as well.)

The only drives I sell are Seagate 120GB and 300GB.

I had many problems with 80% of a batch of their 250GB drives a few
months ago and as a result won't touch them.

Other than that, don't be put off by buying Seagate - I believe it's the
most reliable drive on the market - but avoid the 250GB size.

The 300GB represents quite good value in the UK - don't know about
elsewhere.

And how hot is that, Arnie?

Thanks all for the help. After further investigation I found the
problem. Using SMART I found that the 'Seek Error Rate' showed as
error, so using the utility ADIA32 I ran some tests. My current HDD
had an average seek time of 15ms and stayed there for the majority of
the test, the new HD had result ranging anywhere from 60ms and 2
seconds (yes seconds) mainly up over 700ms!

So I have raised a RMA with the shop and a replacement is on the way,
hopefully I will have more luck this time round.....

Beware of the clicks!

If the new one has the same problems, the next possible source is an
instable PSU.
Beware of the clicks!

Indeed.
