Scrolling in Contacts List causes Outlook 2000 to crash

I have a similar problem to others in this newsgroup, but I haven't seen any solutions.

Dell Dimension 4100, 256k mem, 40gig hard drive, Windows 2000, Office 2000, Outlook 2000 connecting to Exchange Server 5.5.

The user can send a message to a contact by browsing through the Contacts folder, but if he clicks on the "To:" button in a new message and tries to scroll through his list of contacts Outlook crashes with the "Outlook.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows..."

He can select a contact if he doesn't scroll. It's reallly strange. I uninstalled Office and reinstalled Office and it worked temporarily. He added a new contact and the problem exists once again.

I can log the same user into a different machine and scroll through the contacts just fine. I can also log into his machine and scroll through my contacts without issue. I tried to recreated his profile on his machine - the problem still existed with a new profile!

Any suggestions?

I feel like I'm searching for a needle in the haystack...

I had the exact same problem as you.
In order to solve this problem, I:

1) Created a new contacts folder called "Contacts2". "Contacts2" was
now a subfolder of the original Contacts folder in the users Mailbox.

2) I then selected the original Contacts folder and from the "View"
menu I chose "Current View" --> "Phone List"

3) From there, I selected the first entry and then "Shift+Left mouse
clicked" on the last entry.

4) I then Dragged the contents of the original "Contacts" folder to
the new "Contact2" subfolder.

5) From there, I then recopied the contacts back to the orignal
"Contacts" folder using the "Phone list" view. (You can now delete the
"Contacts2" subfolder.)

If this solves the problem for you, Please drop me a line to say
thanks.
Ps. Please spread the word so that others can benefit from this
information too!
