Is there any way with XP to capture and save a screen image or part of one
without the need for a special software program?

Press Print Screen key or Alt + Print Screen. Puts it on the clipboard.

A printscreen is an image and to see it, you will need some form of graphics
program. There are many of these on the internet that are free. Find one
by googling and use it.
Good luck

Thanks. I knew I had done it before, but forgot how.

Then go to Microsoft Paint or some other image program and click Paste.

Alt-PrintScreen captures the current window to the
Clipboard as a .bmp.

Go into your favorite image process and and do a
Paste; or go into Word and do Paste Special.

Windows has this built-in.

Alt + Print Screen, then go to Paint and then select Paste.

By accident I found that alt+prn scrn suggested was also the hotkey for a
little program buried in the bowels of my machine, a little freeware
program called PrintKey2000, that I had forgotten about. With it I could
isolate the portion of the screen I wanted, resize it, adjust color and
contrast, flip it, etc. and print it. A real graphics editor. Really handy.

Hit Prt Scr; for the whole screen; or Alt-Prt Scr for just the active
window. That puts an image in the clipboard; load any program
supporting graphics even Paint) and Paste it as a new image
