screensaver not working

I have had this problem of the XP screensaver not activating for about a year
now. Microsoft and all the usergroups I visited can't explain this and I have
tried various suggestions none working. I have tried kelly's suggestion,I
have researched microsofts website where they said its a known issue and
yesterday too my amusement I booted up without my router/cable modem to the
log on screen but didn't log on and left for 15 minutes to fix a friends
computer and when I came back the screensaver was ACTUALLY ACTIVATED. This is
NOW under my skin again after 1 year.
I was amused so I tried logging on and seeing if I could get screensaver to
work, but no luck. But I did get a message about "couldn't load user profile,
loaded default profile for system". Any suggestions, I have previously done
the registry suggestions, "r"epair o/s, used 2 computer computers side by
side of the same o/s to ensure the registry setting are the same. I am
thinking the user profile is preventing the screensaver from activating. Any
suggestions.

Check the video card.May be reinstallation or updating it with latest
driver may help.
Create a new user profile.
