Screensaver not working properly

My screensaver turns on like normal after the alloted
time, but after a minute shuts off(going back to the
desktop) and never comes back on again. This problem
happens no matter what screensaver I use. if I click on
the preview button it works just fine (meaning that it
doesn't turn off) There are no pop ups or otherwise
disruptive programs that turn the screensaver off (to my
knowledge) and even if there were I would expect them to
turn off the preview the same way. does anyone have any
idea what could be causing this?

I have almost exactly the same problem - started
yesterday after I installed a Fellows 5-button optical
mouse as a PS-2 - screen saver comes up after startup if
left untouched - but not after any activity takes place!
Any ideas?
