Screensaver Hangs in Windows XP

I have a 1 year old system, Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, 80 GB disk, Intel
Graphics Card

When Screensaver mode is engaged, the computer locks up. Need to
reboot.

Also, when I right click on properties to Display Properties window, I
click on Screensaver and try to make changes this window freezes and so
does the cursor. However, I can make changes to other areas say the
Wallpaper for example.

I have My Pictures as a slide show. I reviewed my pictures the other
day and few of them were missing. There was a blank dark screen saying
the picture had been moved.

Could My Pictures be the source of the problem?

HELP!

I'm trying to help my brother who seems to have the same problem on his
Dell running XP Home -SP2, so I'm interested in possile solutions as
well. Just going to the Dispay Properties > Screen Saver screen total
locks the system up. No time to select anything. Reboot required.

Going into Safe Mode to change the Screen Saver settings works, but the
settings will not presist when booting back into normal mode.

You could be having a video card probelem.

Go to your Direct X Diagnostic Tool and test your graphics. If you can run
those spinning cubes without freezing and without restarting your computer,
then your video card could be OK.

If you have problems with those spinning cubes, then, try disabling the
acceleration of your video card. If your screen saver returned to normal,
then your video card is the culprit.
