How to add a new screensaver in Windows XP?

I would like to add a new screensaver which I downloaded from the net to my
screensaver list in Windows XP.
The screensaver I downloaded was zipped and I initially extracted the file
(executable) to the C:/Windows/System folder but this does not alter the list
of available screensavers in the Display Properties/Screen Saver window.
I have searched my C disk for *.scr files to identify the right directory,
but found none!
All instructions I find are about changing to another (available)
screensaver or using a picture show; standard features of Windows XP.

How can help me install this screensaver (with the appropriate file
extention)? I should be simple but I just can't find the info.

Tx in advance for anyone's help!

Put them in <systemroot>\Windows\System32

Some screensavers use an EXE file to be installed correctly. Refer to
instructions that came with screensaver if there are any.
