Screen shut down

I have had my computer suddenly blank out meaning the screen will suddenly go
blank completely save for a dim gray on the entire screen with nothing else
showing. This has happened while viewing emails on three different occasions
including last night (once) and just now tonight (once) When this happens,
it will not respond to any keys including ctrl-alt-del. The only thing that
works is the off/on button which shuts the whole thing down till I switch it
back on and get a message about the system having shut down inappropriately
or something to that effect... This is the entire screen a dark grey with no
icons or anything else. What could be causing this interuption while view
emails in windows email...?
