screen shot?

For some reason, my screen shot function doesn't work. I thought the way it
was supposed to work is when I press the key labelled Prt Scrn, it was
supposed to copy the active screen, and then I could go to some blank
document window and paste it in.

However, no workee that way. So, how do I get a screen snapshot??? Is this
a blatant case of operator trubs?

Not all applications support copying images from the clipboard

Use specific applications like Word, Paint to paste the image

Use Printscreen to capture the entire scree
use Alt+PrintScreen to capture the active scree

Back in the days of DOS, the PrintScrn key used to print the
screen. But in all versions of Windows, this works differently,
and the name of the key is now an anachronism.

To use the key, press it to capture an image of the entire
screen, or press alt-PrintScrn to capture an image of the active
window. Either one captures the image to the Windows clipboard.
Once it's in the clipboard you can paste (Ctrl-V) it into any
application that supports graphics (Windows Paint, other graphics
programs, even your favorite word processor). You can edit or add
to the image as you wish, then print it.

This ability to manipulate the image in a program before printing
it is an improvement over the original DOS method of just
printing it. But if you'd like that old facility back, there are
several third-party freeware/shareware programs that can do this.

I don't know what you mean by "operator trubs," but my guess is
that you're trying to paste into a program that doesn't support
graphics.

You should be able to do this one of two ways. Place the clpbrd.exe on your desktop, you can drag and drop it out of the windows\system32 folder and then when you press the Prt Scr button you can then open the clpbrd.exe by double clicking your desktop icon and then you can use the "save" or "save as---" function to save it as a file and then attach it to the document of your choice or you should be able to right click in the document after pressing the Prt Scr and then click paste and the full screen shot will show up with the options of expanding or contracting to the size of you choice. At least it does in Microsoft Word. How it acts in other word processors or apps depends on the app. Good luck.

Rather than dragging clipboard from the system32 file, I would suggest,
r-click on the desktop and choose "New>shortcut" and type "clipbrd.exe"(no
quotes). That will create a shortcut on the desktop and there will be less
chance of accidentally losing the clipbrd file.
