I'm not a hardware expert, but as I understand it screensavers have long
since ceased to do squat for saving the screen. They're there just as an
attractive artistic alternative to staring at a black screen, I would
suppose.

Not quite. The main value of a screensaver these days is so someone in
an office can leave his desk without leaving what he was doing visible
to passers-by.
