Screen saver will not activate automatically

My problem is similar to many of those I've read about, but none of the
solutions mentioned work. I have a 17" MacBook Pro with 2 GB of memory,
which is running Windows XP Home under a separate partion. It is not
emulating Windows. Mac OS is running in separatly. I have to reboot to
change OS's. I purchased this last Oct, and it has been an excellent
computer performing almost flawlessly.

However, the first thing I did was install a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse
6000 and a Wireless Comfort Keyboard. Two things I hated about the computer.
Everything worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I had some sort of
gltch that removed a number of my desktop & start menu icons. In many cases,
the only way to recover these icons was to reinstall the software. This I
did with Office XP and AutoCAD Civil 3D with no problems. When I tried to do
this with IPoint & IType, I was forced to uninstall first and then reinstall.
Uninstall did not run automatically, and I had to do much of this manually.
I also used Windows Install Clean Up in the process with only limited success.

I downloaded the latest IPoint & IType software and was finally able to
install them without further incident. It was then that my screen saver quit
working automatically. It does work manually in the preview. The power off
monitor never activates. I tried absolutely everything I could find in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base, in all Community Groups, and in numerous web
searches to solve the problem with no success. I should mention that with
Apple Keyboard Support enabled or disabled, there seems to be no difference.
I have updated and disabled the HID Non-User Input Data Filter, which is
listed twice in my device manager, with no effect. I am not running a DVD
launcher of any sorts. Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD Home is installed,
but nothing associated with it is loading at startup.

I'm at a loss. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

Thanks Bob but this is something I checked. I don't have PCMService or
PowerDVD on my computer. I am running Google Desktop on my system. Could
this possibly be a problem? It never was before, and I exitted it with not
change.

It sounds like the Google Desktop is *indexing* the HDD & if it is ,that
would be considered "activity",which is keeping it from becoming "idle".
I have a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse & it does the same thing, & was
told to turn the mouse upside down when I'm away from the computer.(never
actually tried that though)
Funny though,when I changed screensavers from the "3D Windows XP" to the "My
Pictures Slideshow" ,the screensaver works without my having to do anything
like that.-Go figure.

That was a nice thought Gary, but I've had Google Desktop installed for 2 to
3 months with no problem. I rebooted without it loading with no change.
Thanks anyway.

I'm almost certain Google Desktop is not the problem. I've paused it, exited
it, taken it out of my startup programs & rebooted, all with not effect. The
screen saver was working before I reinstalled my Microsoft Wireless Mouse.
This is where I believe the problem is, but I have tried eveything suggested.
I don't seem to have any of the software that might conflict. Anything else
I should possibly suspect? Thanks.

I found a workaround to my problem. I don't consider it a full solution.
Hopefully this will help others. I'll give the workaround and then explain
how I reached it. It is simply to disable, not uninstall, an unneeded
HID-compliant mouse device and possibly an unneeded HID-compliant keyboard.

This is accomplished by right-clicking 'My Computer', selecting the
'Hardware' tab, pressing the 'Device Manager' button, and then expanding the
'Mice and other pointing devices'. Now if you have more than one device
listed and one is an HID-compliant mouse, then it is likely unneeded. Double
click it and under 'Device usage' select 'Do not use this device (disable)'.
Do the same thing for 'Keyboards' if necessary.

Now to explain how I reached this solution. After searching and trying
everything in the community newsgroups I could find with no success, I then
realized the uniqueness of my situation and solved the problem easily.

I often take my MacBook to the office and set it down on my desk next to my
desktop system. For some unknown to me at the time reason, I kept getting a
couple of "found new device" messages each time I started my MacBook in
Windows. I ignored and bypassed these messages for several weeks. However, I
finally got tired of the messages and decided to see what would happen if I
responded to them. I should mention that these were an HID keyboard and an
HID mouse that were found. I later realized that my laptop had seen the non
Microsoft, made-in-China, keyboard and mouse that were part of my desktop
system.

My mistake!! After installing the new HID's found, I developed the above
mentioned screen saver problem plus a couple of other annoying problems. As I
previously mentioned I tried everything. It finally dawned on me that I
should just uninstall the HID's that had been installed. I tried to do this
through the device manager, but I couldn't quite figure out how to do this as
I seemed to have under Human Interface Devices several HID's that were
needed. I didn't initially think to just uninstall these devices under the
Keyboard and Mice devices.

When I finally realized what to do, I uninstalled the HID's under Keyboards
and Mice. This worked great until I rebooted, then everything was
reinstalled. I then tried disabling instead of uninstalling the HID-compliant
mouse device. This worked. Now my MacBook Pro Touchpad is disabled. Both my
wireless mouse, the touchpad, and my screen saver were working before my
little mishap.

Does anyone have any additional advice or a more permanent solution? Thank
you.

I downloaded MS Visual Web Developer. Following that my screensaver stopped
engaging. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions anyone?

i had exact same problem....unplugged stupid mouse and keyboard and
screensaver works fine.....

I put this question to Jim Ormsbee or anyone else that may be able to help.

While I have read nearly every post regarding the "screensaver" issue, non
seem to apply to my situation.

My OS is Vista Basic (I hate Vista just to let you know). My screen saver
had worked just fine until about 2 months ago when my DVD/CD drive quit
functioning. After three Geek Squad phone calls, they determined that I
needed to uninstall the DVD/CD "driver", then re-install the driver. I have
had to do that four times....it finally seems to be working. BUT, since that
time, my screen saver will not work.

I do not have the HID Non-User Input Data Filter. Only thing listed in the
HID is the USB.

I do not have a wireless key board or mouse. Nothing new "wireless", no
hardware changes.

The darn screen saver just won't work!!!! If anyone has any ideas, I would
so appreciate them. I warn you, I have just enough computer knowledge to be
dangerous.

I mention Jim Ormsbee as he seems to have written the most posts regarding
this issue. But I truly will welcome help from anyone who might have the
answer.

THE REAL EASY FIX FOR A SCREEN SAVER THAT STOPS WORKING AFTER INSTALLING A
WIRELESS MICROSOFT MOUSE IS TO DO THE FOLLOWING, GO TO
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ , then click on CUSTOM (not Express),
then check the small box in front of MICROSOFT HID NON-USER INPUT DATA
FILTER, then go to the top of the page and click INSTALL/DOWNLOAD. That is
it, it will download on your computer in less that a minute, and guess what
I T DOES W O R K !!! Now X out of the Internet and set your Screen
Saver for 1 minute just to check it and you will see that it does work. It
did for me...

I forgot to say, in my other statement, that after clicking on CUSTOM, then
look to the left of the screen and click on HARDWARE UDATES, this is where
you will find the small box that you need to check in front of the words
MICROSOFT HID NON-USER INPUT DATA FILTER.

sorry for the empty post just above this..

two week old Acer Aspire 5520 running Vista Home Premium (don't get me
started).. machine had touchpad problems (Alps touchpad driver causes mouse
pointer to jump all over the screeen by itself, randomly, depending on what's
running.. or not.. support calls to Acer couldn't fix it)..

remembered i had a Logitech Cordeless Presenter.. basically a Bluetooth
wireless mouse with a laser pointer in it, so i started using it..

couple of days ago, Vista's screen saver no longer kicked in no matter HOW i
configured it.. i'd get up in the middle of the night to visit the john after
not touching the computer for HOURS (screen saver was set to kick in after
120 minutes).. screen was still on.. figured oh joy.. something's corrupted
already in a brand new machine..

did some searches.. ended up on this page.. read every posting..

set the screen saver to kick in after 2 minutes and TURNED THE LOGITECH
PRESENTER OFF with the slide switch on its belly.. waited two minutes..
blammo, screen saver kicked in..

fixed..

didn't have t UNPLUG anything, didn't have to download anything or modify
anything.. just turn the Bluetooth mouse off.. with the slide switch on its
belly.. that's all it took..

this is one of those totally goofball problems like "every time someone
presses my doorbell, my toilet flushes all by itself"..

i NEVER would have associated in my mind using a Bluetooth mouse and leaving
it turned on would cause Vista's screen saver not to work.. it did..

maybe this'll help someone else.. maybe it won't.. if it does, you're
welcome :) ..

I was about to try the workaround recommended by Jim when I scrolled further
down the page and found the wonderful suggestion by Jodi. I usually prefer
solutions to workarounds, so I figured I would try Jodi's solution. Yup, it
worked just like she said. Just follow her directions. It takes more than a
few minutes because the Microsoft program scans your computer to find the
appropriate updates, then the download and installation takes 5-10 minutes.
Be patient..it's worth it. Jodi, I send you my thanks.
