A friend returned from a vacation with photos he asked me
to put into a screen saver that transitions for one photo
to the next by fading in and out. I've never done this
and need some help. What is used to make such screen
savers and how?

I guess you are running Windows XP?

Try this...right click your desktop and from the menu...
choose Properties / Screen Saver tab.

In the drop window...choose...My Pictures Slideshow.

If you click the "Settings" button, there's an option to
"Browse" to the folder that contains the images you
wish to include in the screen saver.
