Screen resolution using Age of Empires II

My screen resolution is set at 1280x800 but while playing AOE the gameboard
colors are horrible. Do I need a plug in video card? Has anyone else had this
problem?

Probably need new drivers, don't know what kind of computer you have, but
you can go to your video card makers website, download the newest drivers
for it, and that'll usually fix the problem.
