Screen resolution changes on cold booting

I am using Windows XP Pro on an Asus Netbook with an external monitor. Every
time I boot up from cold I notice that my Screen Resolution has gone back to
1024x768 pixels whereas I have set it to 1600x900. My chosen settings work
well for my purposes and there are no problems with any video or picture
display or with internet viewing. If I reboot, the settings remain as
chosen. The problem arises only when I switch Windows off and boot afresh.
Is there any way I can avoid this problem and retain my chosen settings
permanently, that is, until I chose to change.

I did update the graphics and monitor drivers but there was no improvement.
I then re-installed the Operating System and this cured the screen res
problem.
