Screen misbehaving

Hi
I've posted this in another newsgroup but I'm trying to get this solved asap
and the other one has not produced a result as yet.

When I woke up this morning (and this is not the start of a blues song), my
icons had grown magically in size and my screen, previously fixed as fixed
can be was now w-i-d-e-r and l-o-n-g-e-r than ever before. Instead of being
bound by the edges of my monitor, my startup screen now had another half a
screen below and to the right. In other words, it had grown larger.

I have managed to reduce the size of the icons but I have had absolutely no
success in getting the screen to revert to its former boundaries.

In addition, whenever I go somewhere and a subsequent screen opens, this new
screen is not placed centrally on the previous one, it is maybe above, maybe
to the right - it does not appear to be fixed to the previous screen's
position.

Now all my carefully placed (in logical groups, no less) icons have
'snapped' back to the grid formation for the third time and I am getting
tired of patiently relocating them where I want them only to have them snap
back when I try yet again to fix the screen width/length/size problem.

I have not loaded any new software for a couple of weeks - I think MS Silver
was the last or perhaps that synchronise program, but they were a while ago.

I did change my internet plan yesterday from 256k/12g d/l to 1500k/25g d/l
but it was switched to the upgrade and running smoothly before I went to
bed.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Sounds like the Driver for your Graphics Card, or the Card itself, is playing
up.

Right-click on the empty Desktop > Properties > Settings > what resolution
is it set at?

And click Start>Right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device
Manager > see if there are any ? against Display Adaptor.

And you can right-click on Display Adaptor > Properties > and see if XP says
it is working properly.

If you know the Video/graphics car's manufacturer, you can go to their
website and download the latest Driver.

Do a System Restore to a point in time when you KNOW things were good.

The first bit was where the main problem lay - I don't know why/how but the
res was way up. I dropped it back to 800/600 and it squared up instantly.
I fiddled around a bit to get max res with no overlay until I was satisfied
and then locked that.

Then I re-located all my icons.

It's still a bit funny to look at - the pages don't seem quite the same,
much more clutter from the toolbars and header lines etc but at least the
major problem has been fixed.

Thanks for the big assist - I had no clue that that could have been a
problem.
