Screen locksup or freezes and works again if CTL-ALT-DEL is done.

I have one problem and one question. There might be a connection but I am not
sure, so I need somebody to oil my brain joints. All responses are deeply
appreciated.
First my problem:
I have added a new WD SATA drive on my PC and installation software copied
all files from old boot drive to this new boot drive. I have to get all the
programs recognized and working by either reinstalling or reactivating. All
the updates are done except Windows SP3.
My Active screen will lock up after a while and only way I can get back and
do something on the running application is to hit CTL-ALT-DEL to bring the
task manager and close it without doing anything. Then I go back to the
screen and I will get response from mouse clicks for a while until mouse
clicks or keypresses stop responding. It never happened before with my old
setup.
A copy of Windows XP is still in my old drive's primary partition except I
have
removed the entry from boot.ini which references the old drive.
Now the question: Installer folder under Windows is taking up 22 GB of hard
disk space. It shows 3107 files in 56 folders. Is it normal??
The reason I added a new drive was that I had barely few MB of space left on
old drive's primary partition of 50 GB and Updates were constantly failing.
Now I have a bigger partition for C drive -124 GB.

Mark, Thank you for the response. Actually I had reinstalled the Windows and
then loaded all updates. Then i had to reinstall or reactivate all the
applications that I needed followed by their updates. For example my Office
2003 is now at SP3.
I will repair Windows intallation one more time next weekend.
In the meantime if you or someone can provide the answer to my curiosity
about Installer folder, I shall highly appreciate. I need to know if I can
reclaim some of the space there.
