R-click the desktop and select properties, Now look for the advanced tab
for "adjusting" the monitor orientation.

Well if the monitor itself is not rotated (lol) it means that the display
settings have been changed.

You will have to change the rotatation option in the display settings OR..
to make this really easy you can do a System Restore (start -> programs ->
accessories -> system tools -> system restore) if nothing else has been
changed on the system since the display was changed.

Well it would be the nVidia/ATI software reg settings that would be setback.
Thats what Im thinking.

Hi Tonarae,

Right click on the desktop and select properties.
Click Settings - Advanced, and look through the tabs and properties
for a rotation setting and adjust it back to normal.

We get this on our LAN all the pigging time! The students think it is oh
so funny to invert the sceens. There is a combination of keys you press
(its a "feature") involving the arrow keys and either control or alt - I
can't remember it off the top of my head!!! Search google for it - thats
how I find it. If you haven't solved it by monday when I'm back in the
office I'll look it up...

OK, I found it

I'ts a feature of the Intel Extreme Graphics set (which we have at work)

16. Why does my display suddenly turn upside down when playing certain
games?.
The capability to invert the display is a feature of the Intel®
Extreme Graphics that ships with i845 chipset PC's. Rotation is enabled
by default and is activated by the default key combination
<ctrl><alt>down, hence why the display may rotate when playing certain
games with the keyboard. If you are experiencing this problem, you can
disable the rotation feature.

To disable rotation, right click the Intel Extreme Graphics icon on the
taskbar, select Graphics Options, then Graphics Properties. Click on the
rotation tab and remove the tick from the enable rotation box.
Alternatively it can be accessed from Display Properties - Settings -
Advanced - Intel Extreme Graphics - Graphics Properties.

I had the same problem . You hold down Ctrl+Alt and use the arrow keys...
the up/dwn keys make it down-side up and the left/rght keys flip the pesky
thing back the way it should be .

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. My Dad...who is 83...has had
this problem for about 10 days now...but he didn't give me all the facts
until tonight. He only kept mentioning his task bar was sideways...and I was
convinced he just didn't know how to move it back into position. I tried so
many different tactics to get him to move it back in place...no luck. But
once he explained everything he looked at was sideways...it allowed me to
search for a new problem...for which this was the first set of postings I
looked at...and it solved his problem immediately.

The poor man has been reading his e-mails and using MSN messenger sideways
for 10 days. He is almost blind as it is...and this has not helped.

Thanks again.

It's the buttons on the monitor. Good luck!

No...it had nothing to do with the buttons on the monitor. It is exactly as
Andy Smart stated...related to the Intel Extreme Graphics. Very simple
fix...as Andy described.
