screen hangs frequently for several seconds

Using Windows XP SP2 - Word 2003 - Outlook Express 6. Have defragmented and
removed all temporary files. The hangs happen using Word and Outlook Express.
Can anyone suggest what is causing this to happen/how to stop this happening
please.
 
Thankyou I have checked for viruses - have firewall, AVG and spyware active
and have detected nothing amiss. Hung as I typed this.
