live one care - defrag hang at 95%.

live-care- i had only decided to try the live-care defrag engine do to my
local oem defrag engine...

(diskkeeper limited? no help found at oem site, and could not successfully
run a trial version downloaded from oem site)

....hanging upon completion of initial analsys and file compression
routine...hang will occure at very begining attempt to move an actual file
and never time out or even present with an error. checkdisc run multiple
times without reported incident.

drive conversion inspired by this problem - recent fat32 conversion to ntfs
volume C drive: however this problem presented prior to conversion and had
remained after conversion.

local - hang when i attempt to use local/system defrag engine - this will
occur regardless of drive be it c,d, e, or f drives on my local machine.

theory- this has led me to suspect that after recently installing xp sp3
roll up, either or both, local defrag engine, microsoft management console 3.0
version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.080212-0005 : service pack 3, v.3311)
c2007 maybe corrupted or have an MMC 3 inherent performance issue.

I am obsessive about cleaning and defrag my HD's so a thoughtful response
will be grately appreciated. while my knowledge is limited, i am reasonably
proficient with computer jargon so please do not feel a need to dumb anything
down for me should you have an interest in helping me to find a solution.

thank you all.

Running multiple software that you want to do the same thing is not very
good practice, youre corrupting the OS....Either way,1st run disk cleanup,
select more options tab, configure the system restore option, after run cleanup
(select all),once thru,go to run,type:cmd In cmd,type:CHKDSK C: /R Agree
to restart,type:EXIT Restart pc.Back in xp,open cmd,type:CLEANMGR Run
utility,type:Defrag C: It should run...

Hanging at 95% ( or similar ) is not an unusual phenomenon and it should
not be assumed that the system has stopped working. Is the CPU still
running the process. Use Task Manager to check. Remember patience is a
virtue.

Windows Live OneCare is a programme which attempts to provide solutions
for all housekeeping and security needs. Historically such programmes
have not generally lived up to expectations. They are often less
effective in particular areas and grow into resource hogs.
Discriminating users shy away from these products. Windows Live OneCare
is not highly thought of by more knowledgeable users, who post in these
newsgroups.

Running DiskCleanUp and Disk Defragmenter is part of a good housekeeping
routine but it only contributes towards better performances. If
performance has deteriorated you need to examine other factors. You need
a starting point and that is to ascertain what is available to perform
tasks and what tasks is the the system being asked to carried out. Can
you please more information.

How much RAM memory does your computer have?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Hope this helps.
