Screen Flickering After Sleep

I loaded Windows Vista Home Premium edition a week ago and it worked fine;
however, I think that after I loaded an update a problem started. After
putting my computer to sleep and then waking it up, the screen turns on and
off and it makes the noise as though it is recognizing and then not
recognizing a new thing I plugged into the laptop (but I am not). This just
started happening in the middle of one day so I do not know what is wrong.

I have had numerous irritations with Vista's sleep and hibernate
