screen flicker in Outlook

I've suddenly developed two annoying problems in Outlook. First I have this
screen flicker which appeared to start with a new distribution list I created
today but now occurs generally only when I'm in an "inbox" folder. Secondly,
when I want to create an appointment, I suddenly have to enter the time with
no colon - ie 925a - otherwise it reverts back to whatever default time was
in there.

I have the same screen flicker in my Inbox. However, when Outlook is open
any other program (ie: Excel, Explorer...) flickers too. It is driving me
insane. I have tried to reinstall and it didn't help. This is a brand new
computer and I'm ready to throw it out the window. Can anyone help?

Does this flicker occur, with the other apps, all the time OL is open or
only when OL is syncronising?
As its a new PC did you install any driver updates from MS update, when
presumably you first ran win/updated?

The flicker carries over to any program as long as OL is open, not just when
it is syncing. The inbox is the screen that has the most flicker, almost a
roll effect. Excel is the worst with the screen almost rolling (looks just
like the inbox in OL). OL tasks, calendar and other options as well as
browser pages and other application screens will flicker in the tool bar
areas but not the main page. When OL is closed then there is no flicker. I
called Dell and they had me upgrade or update my video driver but it didn't
help. I am setup on on the auto updates so the PC has been updating. I
reinstalled Office thinking that would help, but it didn't.

You should only autoupdate critical updates & not driver updates from MS,
which you should source from Dell

I'll assume you are running WinXp;
If you boot in safe mode do you still have the same problem?

I'm not sure what the settings are for Auto Update. I'll make sure it is set
to only do criticals. I am running WinXP home edition. I have booted in
Safe Mode and there is not a flicker. I'm lost as to what to do now.

If its ok in Safe Mode then likely its a driver or service causing the issue

1st try start>MSUpdate>Review your update history
Check for any driver updates if any are found make a note of them then
either check for the device in Win Device Manager and roll back the driver,
or visit Dell and reinstall the driver from them.
2nd and / or, run msconfig.exe, in the startup tab disable all and reboot,
you will get a msg about changes,
then test OL again.
If no change run msconfig again, in services tab, hide all MS, disable the
rest.
Reboot and retest
If the problem has gone away the I'm afraid its a question of re enabling
disabled items, a batch at a time & retesting untill you can find the
problem one

Be aware if you disable items in msconfig you will be disabling any AV app,
so avoid opening any mail

Ok, it took me all evening but I found the Startup Item to blame. Now what
do I do with it? I have it disabled in the msconfig thingy and OL is no
longer flickering! How do I make the change permenant? Here is the file
info:

Startup Item: ipoint
Command: c:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe
Location: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

That's a Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse driver. If you're using WIndows XP or
Vista, you probably don't need it because the native drivers can do much of
what Intellipoint drivers do. If I were you, I'd restore the item in
MSCONFIG, then uninstall the Intellipoint driver and see if I still had
problems.

I had a major break through at 3am! I figured out the mouse driver thing. I
uninstalled the Intellipoint 6.1 and installed the 5.5 version. Everthing is
fine now! Yeah! Thank you all for the help. This had been driving me crazy
for 2 weeks!!!
