Everytime I boot up or open a new application I keep getting this screen that
says "Run As" at the top. It asks two questions.
Both have a check box.

1. Which user acount do you want to use to run this program? ( lists my
acccount /user name)

Protect my computer from unauthorized activity.

and

2. The following user . (Has space for logon and password).

Question #1 ( Protect my computer from unauthorized activity)
is always checked and I have to uncheck it to run the
application. There are two other people who use my comp besides myself. How
do I shut this down. It is driving me crazy. Any help is
greatly appreciated. This just started happening in the last few weeks. Thanks

You logins are incorrect. Windows does not know who is using the PC.
Start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the way Users login.

Hi DarkWolf,

When you right-click an .exe file, which option is the default (in Bold letters)?

Didnt work Still get the same screens. This comes up everytime a program is
activated. I get this message 6 times in bootup for the programs running in
background as well

Click Start/Run and type:

regsvr32 /i shell32
(Tip from David Candy)

If that does not help, open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell

Backup the key by exporting it.

In the right-pane select (default) and press Delete, so that it becomes "Value not set"

When I right click on a .exe file the Run as command is in bold

The regsvr32/i shell32 did not work. Ran regedit and went to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell but it already says "value not set" although
a sub folder called Command shows default, REG_SZ and "%1" %*. Is that what
you want me toset to "value not set"?

Can you export the whole key and post here?

In a default XP installation, this will be the structure:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas\command

This is not present:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\command

BTW, exefile association fix is available from:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

The REG contents seem to be normal, not sure what's causing the problem. Try this:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell
Set (default) to "open" (without quotes)

Tried that and my comp went nuts. NO application would run. Kept getting that
message about application needing a file association message when I tried to
run ANY application. Nothing would open, not even regedit, I thought I was
going to need to use my system restore CD's which would wipe out everything
on the computer. I could not even do a system restore. I clicked on a link
and suprisingly my Netscape browser opened up (could not get it to open
clicking on icon). Went to this site
http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12 and downloaded a fix program for
the registry and now everything SEEMS to be working ok ....for now. I have
saved this site in my bookmarks for further reference if I need it again.
Thanks for your help.

NO application would run.

In future, you can always start Regedit.exe from Command.com (not CMD.EXE) prompt

Click Start/Run and type COMMAND
Type REGEDIT

For the actual problem, I'll post back if I find a solution.

It's possible that you've altered a different key:

Altering the (default) here causes the problem that you stated.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
