Screeching Sound From Hard Drive

N

Neil

I left the cover off my PC for a couple of days, and now I'm getting a
high-pitched screeching sound from the hard drive. I figure, perhaps some
piece of dust or debris got in there? I'm sure it's coming from the hard
drive. I tried blowing it out with canned air, but that didn't help. Any
suggestions?

Thanks!

Neil

nope...
the drive is hernetically sealed...
no dust could get inside

Usually it is not sealed, it has a breather hole and filter.
That filter is quite sufficient to stop dust though, and
even if a dust particle did somehow manage to get into the
drive, it would not cause a screeching sound as that is from
the bearing, instead dust would (possibly) crash the head if
it had stuck to a platter.

More likely, the drive's bearing has been damaged, either
during shipping, handling, installation, or during the
recent events while the computer cover was off.

The data needs copied off immediately, the diagnostics ran,
and an attemp at RMA if the drive is under warranty still.

AFAIK the breather hole is usually covered by a sticker...
but even if the sticker was taken off...not enough dust would get inside
to immediately damage the drive

I agree, the drive should be backed up at once

When the noise happens, try (gently) stopping the power supply fan or the
CPU fan with the eraser end of a pencil. Those are the usual sources of
such noises.

If there wasn't an exposed hole, how would the magic smoke
get out?
