When i try to schedule SyncToy on Vista, I get the following error message in
the Synctoylog.log file ...

SYNC: 08/05/2007 09:05:58:796: Beginning SyncToy run for all folder pairs.
SYNC: 08/05/2007 09:05:58:906: *** Exception: Showing a modal dialog box or
form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a
valid operation. Specify the ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly style
to display a notification from a service application.

How can this be corrected/avoided?

I'm told this is fixed in the SyncToy 2.0 release.

Essentially the problem with the 1.4 release was that the UI application
SyncToy.exe was also used to schedule syncs. In the new release they have
moved the functionality for running folder pairs on the command line to a
console application called SyncToyCmd.exe and it can run in non-interactive
mode when user is not logged on.

Do you happen to have an idea of when SyncToy 2.0 will be released? And
where did you find out your info?

Info is from Microsoft. No date given on 2.0 release, although I was told it
was in beta right now. I don't ahve the beta nor do I have info on how to get
access to it.

So does a Microsoft employee give this inside info, or is it a developer's
log or something? I'm just really excited about SyncToy 2.0, and I want to
find out where I can get updated news and such on it.

Your scenario should work now with the recently release SyncToy 2.0 Beta. Let
us know how it works out for you.

I have the same problem on a server with Windows 2003 Enterprise SP1. I
scheduled SyncToy to run twice a day. First time it ran smoothly in the
evening (scheduled at 11:00 PM). But I rescheduled it to run at midnight
sharp (12:00 PM). During daytime it ran correctly but then the second time it
had to run in the night it did not. Maybe because of the "midnight sharp"
schedule? So I changed it to run at 12:05 PM (5 minutes past midnight).
Tomorrow I know whether this fixed the problem.

What happens when a file is locked at the moment that SyncToy wants to
analyze it? Does this cause this problem? Theoretically this may happen since
it takes about 45 minutes to analyze the complete set of folder pairs and I
am not halting the applications since I need a 24 hours coverage (worldwide
usage from Singapore to San Jose....).

The 12:00 sharp was not the problem, tried at several different times, every
time the user is not logged in the error occurs, seems for some reason that
once the window does not need to pop up, but after that the program wants to
launch the user interface despite the -R option. Did not yet ttry the 2.0Beta
version, but that's next.

Just installed version 2.0 Beta. Also had to install SQL Server CE... first
time to run takes already more than 2 hours where version 1.4 ran in 50
minutes!
Not sure whether this is the solution....

Just to finish of the story: SyncToy 2 took way over 2 hours to compare the
folder sets I created, so I decided to roll back to version 1.4 (taking
around 1 hour for the same set). So I de-installed 2.0Beta, installed 1.4
again, did a primary run in the foreground and re-activated the scheduled
task. Now I made sure that the task is started at a moment I was not logged
on to the system. So far the scheduled task have been running for 6
consecutive times without having the mentioned problem.
Now I come to a strange conclusion: when I had the scheduled task running
with the first time installment of the 1.4 version, the first run was at
night without being logged on the system. The second time the task had to run
I was logged on to the system. As a consequence the user interface
automatically popped up. I now think that the reason for SyncToy to come with
the problem might be that it ran once from the scheduled task with the user
interface open and after that SyncToy "thinks" that it should always open the
user interface, which, of course, can not be the case when the user is not
logged on.

So, since I want SyncToy to run undisturbed, I have to make sure that the
scheduled task start running when I am not logged on to the system as the
user performing the task.

Although I need to verify my hypothesis, I won't just because of the above
mentioned reason.

I hope this helps others!

I'm seeing the same on windows XP SP2 :
SYNC: 02/12/2008 12:25:00:531: *** Exception: Showing a modal dialog box or
form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a
valid operation. Specify the ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly style
to display a notification from a service application.

I haven't tried synctoy 2.0 as yet. I though it was only needed for Visa.

Any other suggestion for using synctoy 1.4 on XP ?

TIA
