Hi,

We have an Acitve Directory domain along with Windows XP PCs. We like to be
able to schedule to shutdown PCs everynight at a specific time. How can we
accomplish this? With Group Policies?

thanks.

Before you work out how to shut down your PCs I suggest you consider
earnestly whether you should shut them down. People do work at odd hours,
and you won't win any friends if you shut down your financial controller's
PC just as he is about to complete the annual financial statement at 3am.
Your job might be on the line. In this business you must expect the
unexpected.

Yes, it is possible to exempt some PCs from your shutdown policy but IMHO
it's far too risky. Your exception rule might not work the way you
anticipated, a PC might get swapped or replaced, the Financial Controller
might use a different PC for some very good reason. I visualise you standing
in front of your CEO, explaining why it is that the Annual Statement cannot
be issued on time. "Sorry, boss, we thought we had it all worked out but it
seems that something went wrong with our exception rule. It'll check it out
right now". "No, you won't!"

If you want to save energy then you need to implement a scheme based on
company policy and staff cooperation, not on automatic processes that can
(and will) go wrong.

Schedule a "hibernate" on each machine.
