I ran SCF/Scannow. It seemed to run OK, as a progress bar did its thing.
But there was no message about what happened. Would it have shown a message
if any dlls had to be copied from the distribution CD? If dlls were copied,
what does that do to all the updates that were applied since the frst
installation?

Check your event viewer.

Hi Laurel,

Start/Run/Msinfo32/Tools/File Signature Verification Utility. Or go to
Start/Run and type in: sigverif. Modify your settings under Advanced. When
the scan is done, go back to Advanced/Logging/View Log.

Another tool for both Current and Older Windows Files: Go to Start/Run and
type in: verifier

Modify the registry for verifier.exe

Well, I roamed around and lo and behold in "component services" I found
"event viewer." If something had happened would it be clear to me? The
stuff I see there doesn't look relevant. But I don't understand what it's
all about anyway.

In System events look for Windows File Protection entries.
