when scavenging is enabled is it neccessary to "uncheck the delete this
record when it becomes stale" for the domain controller and the alias (cname)
entry?

I would leave those alone mostly, as you really only
want to scavenge dynamic records -- unless you are
talking about older dynamic records that need that
check box -- then yes.
