Clear Cache?

Setup:
Windows 2k AD Domain
AD integrated zone

Issue:
Forward Lookup & Reverse Lookup Zone have MANY stale records

Steps taken:
- I've enabled scavenging of stale records (default setting of 7 days) on
the AD integrated zone

Questions:
1. Will enabling scavenging of stale records remove those static host
entries I put in for our UNIX systems, routers, switches, etc? Will active
(live) systems re-register so name resolution is not broke? What
ramifications should I expect from doing this?

2. Will "Clear Cache" remove those static host entries I manually entered
in? What ramifications should I expect from doing this?

Thanks - JT

That will take care of them and in most cases they
don't much matter.

Not the static ones. Just the ones that were dynamically
registered.

No. The cache is for things you resolve from
OTHER servers.

It will only cause these records to be scavenged if you have DNS reset the
time stamps on all records.
To verify, make sure the DNS management console is in Advanced view, double
click the static records, clear the check box "Delete this record when it
becomes stale", which clears the time stamp. Records without a time stamp
will not be scavenged.

Absolutely not, "Clear Cache" only clears the DNS server's cache, if the DNS
server is authoritative over the record, it will not be in the cache.

Thanks to Herb & Kevin for answering my questions. I thought I was safe in
enabling these settings and clearing the DNS cache but it doesn't hurt to get
a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

Thanks again!
