Scanning Problem

I have Windows XP Home SP2 and I use a Dell 924 All-in-one Printer/Scanner.
I have a number of Photo Programs installed. I find that in most of these
Programs any attempt to import from the Scanner (using ‘Import’ or ‘Acquire’
or ’Select Source’) results in an error message that the Program ’has
encountered an error and needs to close’. In some cases this even causes the
PC to hang for a while.
There are two exceptions to the problem – MS Paint and Adobe Photoshop
Elements – from within both of which I can import from the Scanner
(apparently using WIA).
The problem can be overcome fairly easily since I can scan images from the
Scanner software into the PC and then open and work with the image in any
Program I choose – indeed it is even possible from the Scanner’s All-in-one
centre to scan images directly into some of the ‘troublesome’ Programs. This
confuses me even further – I can’Export’ from Scanner to Program but cannot
‘Import’ from within Program!
I am curious as to the cause of the problem. Has it to do with WIA/Twain?
Any suggestions?

WIA and Twain have never played nicely together. Sometimes Twain works
better if WIA is disabled in Services (Control Panel, Admin Tools).

Disabling WIA seems to make no difference - all behave exactly the same as
described.
