scanning photos .jpeg or .tif?

I AM A NOVICE TO THE "PHOTO WORLD" BUT WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD IS THAT I SHOULD
SAVE A "MASTER" OF MY PHOTOS, THEY SHOULD BE IN .tif AND I SHOULD SCAN THEM
AT 600 RESOLUTION.

DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT OR IS IT HOGWASH?

I WILL WANT TO EDIT THE PHOTOS LATER AND WAS TOLD I SHOLD NOT USE .jpeg.

THE .tif FILES ARE JUST SO BIG.

I AM USING "MY PICTURES" TO CAPTURE THE PHOTOS FROM MY HP psc 2510
photosmart all-in one SCANNER.

ANY HELPFUL HINTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

First, please turn off your caps lock. It
makes your message hard to read.

There is lots of useful info on scanning
at the following links:

A Few Scanning Tips:

Photographic Resolution - How much
can we scan?

Image File Formats - which to use?

Personally, I scan my family photo
collection at 300 DPI and archive the
unedited scans in the .png format.
After editing I save copies for printing
and e-mail in the .jpg format.

Also you can read about the different
formats at the following link and decide
for yourself which is best for you.

TIFF files are larger because they are not compressed. Jpeg files use a
compression logarithm so technically there is some loss of the original
image. Since you are scanning from printed images you are not starting with
"pure" digital files to start with. I would go with highest quality jpeg file
available. You will not notice a difference.
