Scanning Outgoing Emails

Hi Group,

Is there any point in scanning outgoing Emails. My thinking is that if I
have a virus and my software didn't catch it coming in, it won't catch it
going out?

By the way, I am running Norton.

It will if there's been an update in the meantime.
However, I've seen several unknown infections be caught by the simple
fact that it's scanning a lot of something when NO mail is being
knowingly sent by the user. Many times this is spam that wouldn't be
identified by the AV as malicious in any case.

A decent firewall can perform the same 'alarm' function, and much
more, so I'd choose to spend my resources that way rather than the
outgoing mail scan function of Norton.

The firewall is more likely to catch something in this
scenario, as your typical emailing virus doesn't bother getting
involved with the user's mail client or server, it does it all
by itself
