Scanning black & white negatives

I have about two hundred old 4x5 black & white negatives that I want
to scan. What would be the best scanner to use, under $500?

Be sure to use the mode that allows you to access the histogram for best
results in scanning. Do note however, the whites are truly just above the
point(s) shown - it's not quite sensitive enough to show the peak (clear
film) limits.

I have had great results with an Epson 2450 and VueSacn on a Mac. The
2450 has been replaced by the 3200 and I have heard it is even better.
I am pretty sure you can get one for less than $500, possibly as low as
$350 or so.

The 2450 has holders for 4x5 film that produce the proper setup. I
wouldn't recommend if for 35mm tho.

I do bw 4 x 5 with an Epson 3200 and using Vuescan all the time. The
3200 has been replaced by a newer scanner (48??) with a higher scanning
resolution. But until test results are out, I am skeptical that it
actually delivers better resolution of fine detail. Meanwhile you
ought to be able to find 3200s available at discounted prices. If you
want to wait for the newer scanner, check
www.photo-i.co.uk
which is in the process of reviewing it. However, in the past I've
found that reviews there were perhaps a trifle optimistic.

Epson 4870.

It is new and fast and accurate.
