Scanned charts - best way to clean up

I have 5 technical data charts that have been photocopied from the orginal doc. Do not have the electronic files. What is the best way to clean up axis titles, rescale one chart, and generally clean up the line quality if possible. Any special tricks? I was going to scan on at 4800 dpi, then drop the images into XLS or PhotoShop? Ultimately, these have to be imported into PPT. Am using Office XP Pro. Thanks for your help!
 
Hi Jan -

Anything scanned is next to useless in Excel. I think you're looking at
Photoshop, or maybe white out.
