Are you sure you have tried the latest drivers:
You must download and install the XP drivers for Windows XP.

Remove any previous driver install first, then reboot computer before
installing the new drivers.
The scanner must NOT be plugged into USB before the Software is fully
installed.

The driver is a 54 megabyte download. You can buy a CD from here.

Sorry to be so late to the party, but I am have the same problem with a 3300
that was new in the box. Downloaded the drivers from HP and no luck on a
newly built system with a fresh install of XP Home. While I was researching
this problem I saw something about there being an incompatibility with some
Nvidia based motherboards. I can't remember where I saw this. I believe it
was on the HP site, but I can't locate it now. I loaded the software on
another system, a compaq laptop, and it work without problem.
