I don't see anything under Win XP System Tools to do the
equivalent of a ScanDisk or check for lost clusters etc.
I'm having trouble getting Defragmeter to work. It goes so
far then locks. It seems there used to be a couple of
ScanDisk checks that could be done first but I'm not
finding. Suggestions please.

The Windows XP equivalent of Scandisk is called chkdsk. You can
run it from the Start | Run line.

Right click on a drive, select properties, click on the
tools tab and look at error-checking.

It's important to note that NTFS is pretty reliable
overall and the problems you may have been used to with
FAT and FAT32 partitions are extremely uncommon. So much
that Symantec doesn't really do much in the way of disk
repair anymore (even though they wrote the scandisk
program you'll be using for MS).

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
