scandisk /?

brendan

can anybody tell me why xp home does not have scandisk?
i suppose that is a rhetorical question.
What i need to know is, is there a way that I can scan my
hard disk for lost clusters and problems, as all you need
is one crash to lose information and i like knowing when i
need to reinstall my information,
keeping in mind that i like keeping my HDD as ntfs and
don't want to have to copy from '98 which is FAT.
please help with perhaps other programmes that do the same
thing.

brendan ;
Scandisk is now Error-checking.
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive/Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.
You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK
This will display help for chkdsk :
Type: chkdsk /? | Enter

The XP equivalent of scandisk is called chkdsk. You can run
chkdsk from the Start | Run line.

On the subject of Chkdsk.

Please. how can I see a report when chkdsk finishes. The report it generates
appears and disappears too quickly to read. As well, I am usually not there
when it finishes.

The summary is logged as a System event.
Right Click My Computer, Left Click Manage.
Maximize, to get a better view, Expand Event Viewer,
System and locate the event for Chkdsk.

But it does. In Window Versions since 98, ScanDisk was superseded by Check
Disk. You can run it from a Command Prompt or from:
A. Start/My Computer/Right click the Hard Drive [usually listed as "Drive
C"]/click "Properties" on the Drop Down Menu/click the "Tools" tab/click
"Error Checking" (which is the Check Disk Tool)/Checkmark "Automaticly fix
File System Errors" in the next window, then click "Start/click "Yes" in the
next window to schedule it to occur on the next Startup.
B.To do it from a Command Prompt: Start/Run/type "cmd" and click "OK"/In the
Command Prompt Window, type chkdsk /f and press the keyboard "Enter" key/
then type "Y", (leave out the quote markers in all windows, I just entered
them for emphasis/highlighting purposes) in the next window and press the
"Enter" key again.
Sorry to be so wordy, but you need to know you can access all "Parameters"
you can use with the Check Disk Tool, just go to a Command Prompt Window
again (sub-paragraph B above) and type in "chkdsk /?" [by the way, BE SURE
there is a space between chkdsk AND the forward slash mark in every entry to
the tool], then again press the keyboard "Enter" key. All you really need to
use are the "F" Parameter most of the time (Automaticly fix File System
Errors) in sub-para A above or Parameter R [Locate bad sectors and recovers
readable information {implies F, which simply means that Parameters F and R
are executed together which takes a lot longer to run and should be done if
you suspect Hard Drive problems}. The Parameter F is seleted by checkmarking
the top selection in sub-para A above. If you want to select the R
Parameter, checkmark the lower selection. Hope I did not screw up anything
or you with all these words.

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
