Why is there no scandisk in XP? Chkdsk doesn't do all scandisk did, does it?

Scandisk is for Win9x operating systems. Chkdsk is for operating systems
based on NT.

As to whether it is as good as scandisk: I have never had any case where
chkdsk did not solve a problem involving logical disk corruption. As with
scandisk, any corrupted, but recovered file, may well be unusable.

Chkdsk is in Dos and 9x. Scandisk (which is Norton's Disk Doctor) was named so to distinguish it from MS's Chkdsk.

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the WinNT/2K
OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk," which performs
much better.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

Chkdsk doesn't do all scandisk did, does it?

Well, except for the silly GUI display, it does more.
