hello,

when ever i try and perform a scandisk on windows xp it advises me to
restart but when i restart it appears cannot open disk for direct access
scandisk complete then starts as normal is there anyway to resolve this

Scandisk has been retired. Use Error Checking (chkdsk.exe) in XP.

This seems to be a very common problem recently.

Do you have ZoneAlarm 5 ??

[[Since the new version 5.0 of TrueVector accesses the disk so early in the
boot-sequence, CHKDISK cannot run with the /F option at boot-time, because
it needs to access the disk directly.]]

Uninstall ZA5 and install an earlier version.

Or get the ZA update that *fixes* this problem.

Stuart,

Check for ZA updates.

Zone Labs Home Page

From ZA HELP:

[[Getting updates to ZoneAlarm
When you purchase ZoneAlarm you automatically receive a year of free
updates. You can check for updates manually, or set ZoneAlarm to check
automatically.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checking for updates manually
To find out if there are any updates available:

Go to the Preferences tab of the Overview panel.
When you want to check for an update, click the Check for Update button.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checking for updates automatically
To have ZoneAlarm automatically notify you when an update is available,
follow these steps:

Go to the Preferences tab in the Overview panel.
Under Check for Updates, select Automatically.
Note After your one-year product update subscription expires, both manual
and automatic update checking are disabled. Contact Zone Labs to renew your
subscription. ]]

I have been looking at the Zone Alarm site for a fix, but have not found
one. Do you have a link? {My ZA is 5.0.590.043}

If your problem results from having Zone Alarm 5.0x installed, you should be
able to run chkdsk /f on any partition except your primary partition. For
the primary partition try the following {adapted from a post by ruedishe on
the ZA forum}:

Open the Zone Alarm Control Center and go to Overview, Preferences.
Clear the box to load Zone Alarm at startup. Accept the error message {if
any}. This step is just to avoid messages during the following.

Go to Device Manager. In the View menu click on Show Hidden Devices.

In the hidden devices section expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers.

Scroll down and right click on VSDATANT and select Disable.

Reboot. Chkdsk /f should now run on your primary partition.

Go back to Device Manger and right click on VSDATANT and select Enable.
Reboot.

Go to All Programs, Zone Alarm and start Zone Alarm Security. Then go
back to Overview, Preferences and check the box to load Zone Alarm at
startup.

My installation of XP SP 2 still does this. I can edit the registry to make it stop trying to run chkdsk at boot time, but I can't get it to check C:, no how, no way.

OTOH, I have a W2k pro installation that does the same thing, so I'm convinced that the problem is due, in part, to something I've done/installed/?

No, I don't have ZoneAlarm. I do have Symantec antivirus and a program that uses Cryptkey, but I've disabled both of those temporarily to see if that made a difference, and it didn't help.

So far this is not a problem, but it's annoying that I can't seem to fix it.
