scandisk log location?

Yesterday my HD started making nasty sounds like the read head constantly
hitting something. And the HD slowing down to a crawl, and event viewer
getting errors like:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging
operation.

So I set it to do a Scandisk with autocorrect and bad sector test. It's
WindowsXP Pro, so it started after rebooting. I let it go and went to bed.
This morning the PC was at the welcome screen...and everything's acting
A-OK! No problems, slowdowns, or sounds.

So my question is: Where is the log for the scandisk? How can I find out
what it detected and what it did?
I did a search of *.txt; *.log and found a lot...but nothing that seemed to
apply.

Secondly, since doing the scandisk I started seeing errors in the Event Log
like:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: atapi
Description:
The driver has detected that device \Device\Ide\IdePort0 has old or
out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.

How does one update the firmware? Is that for the motherboard, or the HD
itself??

Thanks for any help!!

How to view the Chkdsk Log Entry:-
You will find the chkdsk log entry in the Application log of Event Viewer.
To access the Event Viewer
.. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools> Event Viewer > Application.
.. Look for the Event from the source "WinLogon".

Don't know about the rest......
