Hi,

My friend has Win2k and everytime he turns her computer on, scandisk starts and freezes at around
75% complete. This just recently started. Virus or failing HD? I don't know.

I'm a WinXP guy and don't know too much about Win2k. I'd really like to help him.

I need utilities that I can run straight from the CD for antivirus and for the HD to check this out.

Any suggestions (other than upgrading to WinXP)?

TIA, Greg

You could install his hard disk as a slave disk in your
own WinXP PC, then scan it for viruses.

My guess is a failing HDD.

If you skip the check-disk, will the box still boot?

If so, do START>>RUN and enter EVENTVWR.
Look around in the system log for a few of the most recent chkdsk results...
since chkdsk is not completing properly, most recent reports probably never
got logged... but maybe some older reports are still there.
The source will be WINLOGON (sorry... forget the event ID #).

Look for any "MB in Bad Sectors"... should be 0 (zero).
If not, and the number is increasing with time, the drive is failing... time
to replace it.

....good idea... and try running chkdsk from there too... sometimes my HDDs
want a "vacation" in a different computer for a truly effective chkdsk
run... why? dunno... but it works... :]
