I've learnt that Scandisk is no longer part of XP, but
apparently I can use Checkdisk instead. Can someone
please tell me where it is and how to run it?

Hi,

Right click any hard drive, Properties/Tools - Check Now or Start/Run and
type in: chkdsk

Note: For some users Disk Cleanup freezes during the Compressed File Phase:
This edit corrects the problem:

Disk Cleanup - Compressed Old Files Freezes (Line 48)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

You can run it from cmd prompt,or run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDS
this is read only mode, for the repairs:CHKDSK C: /F (fix) or /R (repair)
You can R.click any hd in my computer, properties, tools, fix file system errors
Read only runs in explorer, the utilitys run at reboot.
