says receiving 3 messages, but only 2 show up in invox - why

This has happened several times: Example: Says receiving 4 messages, but 4
do not show up in Inbox, only 2 or 3. I have looked in Junk and every other
folder, but cannot find the missing e-mail(s). I am on Microsoft Outlook
2003.
 
look in the unread folder... if it's not there, what mail server do you use?
It would be something with the message count on the server confusing
outlook.
