Hi there,
Why does it take so long for Windows 2000 Pro to log out current user while
displaying the screen "Saving your settings", what does the windows do in
the background? I need to mention it is fresh new computer.User does not
have any extra programs installed whereas for other users takes less. Thanks
a lot, Calin

goto Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs > Change/Remove Programs and see
if Q329170 is
listed as an
update if it is remove it.

plus

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user profile ...
set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

There appears to be a hotfix available from MS (thanks Neo)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814770

but you will have to telephone MS to order it.

also

Another workaround that can work is to do a
net stop spooler
before shutdown.

Save Settings is saving the positions of the icons in the folders etc. There
is a registry key that you can use to stop saving settings on exit, but it
doesn't seem to work.

User Key:
----------

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

System Key:
------------

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

Key to create:
--------------

NoSaveSettings

Type:
-----

DWORD

Value:
------

1 - Disable Save Settings

0 - Enable Save Settings

As I said before, it doesn't seem to work, but is listed in the Windows 2000
Registry Guide for the Resource Kit

I hope this helps.

Check the event log. If there are entries with details like the
following, you may have a user profile problem:

Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Description:
Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a roaming profile,
your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;837115 for
more details on this problem and a fix.
