I have been faihfully keeping my XP updated from Microsoft over all
these years. This is quite an accomplishment using a dial modem which
is barely connecting thanks to the wonderful service of Telus Canada
who couldn't wire a decent phone line if their CEO' s life depended on
it. Anyway, I digress, the question is :

Is there some way of saving all the updated OS so that I in the event
I have to toast my hard drive and reinstall XP I don't have to spend
the rest of my life updating from SP1 ?

Thanx in Advance

Obtain an imaging application and an external hard disk drive of sufficient
(overly sufficient) size and make periodic full images of your system.

Image the system to an external hard drive using Acronis True Image. After
an initial full image subsequent images can be incremental or differential.
Imaging can be on a partition or drive basis and restores on a file,
partition or drive basis. It also does file backup and disk cloning.

might see if you can still purchase a copy of SP2 update cd from ms.
would save a lot of updating.
all you world need to do then is just those items since SP2.

there are several software packages that allow you to save an image of the updated system.
problem is restoring that image later.
you still have to install something and then the imaging software to be able to restore the image.
