Help please. I have CD-RW drive CRW-5224A, produced byASUS. It came with a CR-RW Mitsubishi disc which I use like a floppy, saving, altering and resaving information. I have now bought a pack of CD-RW, Packard Bell but find I can only save read-only copies, cannot make any alterations and can only delete everything on the CD (not one file). Can anyone explain why not, can I change the format to enable them to be used as floppies as well, or is there an alternative CD that I have not seen that works like a floppy?
Thanks

The method you used on your first CD is called block
writing, the cd needs to be specially formatted and you
require a UDF reader to access the CD and most formatted
CD's have an installable udf reader on the CD for someone
who may need to access the CD and dont have a UDF reader.
You get a formatter with Roxio or Nero burning suites. I
use Roxio "Direct CD". You do lose about 100 MB of the CD
space when formatting. but it is a handy method of saving
files.
PS. when putting files on the CD give it a couple of
minutes before you try to access the files because this
system is notouriously unstable and gets into an infinite
loop and freezes your system. I needed to kill it at the
mains to escape once. but if your patient its OK.

Thanks - is a burning suite something downloaded free from the internet or do I have to buy it? Any problems with installation of software - does it have an adverse effect on anything?

Your CD-RW may have came with a "lite" version of the one of the two popular
burning suites. If not, then you will have to buy a complete retail
version.

The two popular ones are:

Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator and Drag to CD

Ahead Nero Burning Rom and InCD.

Although UDF can be viewed as a "handy method of saving files," be
advised that it is also trouble-prone. Packet writing systems work
great, until they don't. Once that happens, you are pretty much stuck
with a CDR full of trash you won't ever see again.

Never put critical files on a UDF CDR(W). It's just asking for
trouble.

Thanks to you all - perhaps I will stick with what I have. It is good to know why one CD works differently.
