Saving to CD

P

Peg

I had Windows 98 on my old computer. I have saved many
pictures and designs on CD's. Now my new computer has
Windows XP and is unable to read the CD's that I
created. Is there any way I can access these files?

Windows XP should be able to read them just fine. How were they
created? Did you use any special software to do so?

How are you trying to read them? What happens when you try? If
you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

Is your problem with all CDRs or just CDRWs? Because if it is just
CDRW...

The problem is that WinXP as installed out of the box, does not
support the use of UDF file format, which is the format that allows
you to use a CDRW like a large floppy drive.

If you install the same CD burner software you had on your Win98
machine (for example, Nero Burning Rom), then that would work.

But before you do that I *think* I recently saw that Microsoft just
issued an update that accommodates UDF packet writing. You should
check.

What software did you create the CDs with? If it was a 'packet writing'
program like Direct CD or InCD then you will need to install a
compatible version (or at least the related udfreaer/EasyWrite Reader)
for it.

If it was with something that generates standard CD 'sessions' like Easy
CD Creator or Nero then it is probably a matter of hardware
compatibility - especially over the media used
