saving text documents in word 2000 instead of wordpad

when i save a text document in word 2000, the file is actual saved as a wordpad document. How do i correct this thereby haveing the file saved as a word document

It is still saved as a Word document, but Windows is not reporting it
correctly. You can re-register Word which will correct its file associations
